For Probation
Juvenile probation in New York City is designed to supervise, support, and redirect youth who have been involved with the juvenile justice system—often in place of detention or incarceration. While probation is a legal consequence, it can also be a critical turning point in a young person’s life.
Understanding juvenile probation and how to avoid it empowers families to take meaningful action before problems escalate.
What Is Juvenile Probation?
In NYC, juvenile probation is overseen by the New York City Department of Probation (DOP). It applies to youth who have been adjudicated (found responsible) for delinquent acts in Family Court. Probation officers work closely with youth and families to develop and enforce an individualized plan that may include:
- School attendance monitoring
- Behavioral therapy or counseling
- Community service
- Curfews and check-ins
- Drug testing (if applicable)
The goal is not punishment but rehabilitation—addressing underlying issues like trauma, family conflict, or substance use that may be contributing to a child’s behavior.
Why Early Prevention Matters
While probation offers a second chance, it’s a sign that earlier interventions were missed or ineffective. Our mission is to help families:
- Recognize early warning signs of risky behavior
- Access youth-focused resources like mentorship, counseling, and academic support
- Connect with professionals before the justice system becomes involved
A Note for Parents
You are not alone if your child is on probation or at risk. With the proper support, young people can grow beyond their mistakes and find a new direction. We aim to provide the tools, knowledge, and partnerships to intervene early, guide effectively, and build lasting change.
